The Historian
by Elizabeth Kostova

A book about a girl, her father and mother and their search across generations and continents for Dracula. The story is told by the girl, she is retelling her experiences as she travels with her father across Europe. The story is often broken into by other people's stories that the father meets and interacts with. Each person is searching for Dracula because they have received a book with a picture of a dragon in the middle, and this has led them down a dangerous path.
When I read this book I was traveling through Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. These countries and their monasteries are described throughout the book as all the characters have reason to visit them in their research journeys. I was planning on visiting Bran Castle and Snagov Monastery during my trip, and wanted to read this book for a fun side story. Because of this connection I enjoyed the book. However, if I had been sitting at home I doubt I would have made it through the 704 pages and all the story's detours.
