The man is a sex crazed schizophrenic, who spends the whole book locked up, or chasing and malling women. His wife just wants him back, since she lost him to the disease, but spends her time getting the vote for women, and pushing through bills to promote birth control - not that both of these are not wonderful accomplishments.
His head nurse, O'Kane, basically becomes as crazy as his employer, but gets "redeemed" in the end, because the girl he's been sleeping with for his whole life finally agrees to marry him.
The redeeming part of the book is that it all takes place in Santa Barbara, and I love SB!
